The Moonstone

The Moonstone was the sixth book in the reading sequence, begun in August 2023 after Doctor Zhivago. Often called the first detective novel in English, Wilkie Collins's masterpiece brought something entirely new to the daily readings — suspense, mystery, and a brilliantly constructed puzzle told through multiple voices.

The novel's distinctive structure — a series of narratives by different characters, each telling their part of the story — made it particularly enjoyable to read aloud. Each narrator has their own voice and personality, from the irascible Gabriel Betteredge to the evangelical Miss Clack.

The reading ran from August through November 2023. After the emotional weight of Doctor Zhivago, The Moonstone offered a lighter pace without sacrificing depth — a reminder that great fiction can also be tremendous fun.
