Our Mutual Friend was the thirteenth book in the reading sequence, begun in June 2025 after A Tale of Two Cities. Dickens's last completed novel, and the sixth of his works in the series — a dark, strange, magnificent book about money, identity, and the Thames. It represents the culmination of a long journey through Dickens's world.

The reading ran from June through December 2025, covering four books. Our Mutual Friend is Dickens at his most ambitious and his most peculiar — a novel that begins with a body pulled from the river and never quite lets go of that darkness, even in its comedy.

There is something fitting about reading Dickens's final novel after having read so many of the others. The echoes and connections between the books become part of the experience — a deepening familiarity with a writer's mind and heart.
