Book Eight

Why Bleak House
Robbie introduces the reading · TBC
Bleak House was the eighth book in the reading sequence, begun in June 2024 after Anna Karenina. This was a return to Dickens — the third Dickens novel in the series — and many consider it his masterpiece. The fog that opens the novel, the endless case of Jarndyce and Jarndyce, and the dual narrative voices make it one of the most ambitious novels in English.
The reading ran from June through December 2024, covering sixty-seven chapters. Dickens alternates between a third-person present-tense narrator and the first-person voice of Esther Summerson — a structural experiment that gives the reader aloud particular pleasures and challenges.
By Book Eight, reading Dickens had become a familiar joy. His characters announce themselves in a single sentence, his set pieces are made for the human voice, and even at his most sprawling he never loses his hold on the listener.
